We utilize standard DCDMA wireline core sizes to ensure optimal recovery and data quality. We recommend a “telescoping” strategy—starting with larger diameters and reducing size as depth increases to optimize costs.

Core Diameter Representation

HQ (Hole Quality) refers to a larger core size. This is often the preferred choice for the initial phases of exploration and for projects where the rock integrity is compromised or highly fractured.

Key Advantage

Sample Volume. The significantly larger core diameter provides a greater volume of rock. This is crucial for:

  • Geotechnical Analysis: Better observation of rock mass characteristics, structural features, and fracture intensity (RQD).
  • Resource Confidence: A larger sample volume reduces the sampling error and improves the confidence in the average grade determination, especially for deposits with coarse or unevenly distributed mineralization (like gold nuggets).
  • Core Recovery: The larger drilling annulus often allows for better fluid circulation and stability, leading to higher core recovery rates, particularly in difficult, broken ground.

NQ (Narrow Quality) is the industry standard core size for most exploration drilling, especially for deeper holes and underground mining applications.

Cost and Efficiency. The smaller diameter of the core  and the corresponding smaller diameter of the drilling equipment provide several operational benefits:

  • Faster Penetration: Less rock needs to be cut, resulting in higher average drilling rates (meters per shift).
  • Lower Operating Costs: Smaller rods and thinner bits require less power, less water, and less consumption of expensive consumables.
  • Maneuverability: NQ equipment is lighter and easier to mobilize, making it ideal for underground drilling (as mentioned in your company profile) or in remote surface locations where transport is challenging.

PQ is the largest common core size used in exploration. It is often employed in the very earliest stages of a project or for specialized, high-volume sample requirements.

Key Advantage

Massive Sample Volume. The PQ size provides the largest possible sample for the standard wireline method. This volume is critical for:

  • Metallurgical Testing: Providing sufficient material for bulk samples to conduct preliminary or complex metallurgical recovery tests, which cannot be done with smaller cores.
  • Geotechnical & Hydrological Wells: The large hole diameter facilitates the installation of thick-walled casing, or large-diameter instruments for piezometer (groundwater) and specialized geotechnical monitoring.
  • Coarse Mineralization: It provides the most representative sample when dealing with resources where the valuable minerals are coarse-grained or heterogeneously distributed (e.g., certain gold or copper deposits), minimizing the Nugget Effect or sampling bias.

BQ refers to the smallest core size among the four main wireline standards (PQ, HQ, NQ, BQ). It is a specialized choice driven primarily by cost and the required depth.

Depth and Economy. The BQ size maximizes operational efficiency for the deepest holes:

  • Extreme Depth Capacity: The small, lightweight rods allowing for greater penetration depth than any other standard size.
  • Cost-Efficiency: Less volume of rock needs to be cut, minimizing wear on diamond bits, reducing energy consumption, and lowering the overall cost per meter for very deep programs.
  • Minimal Environmental Impact: The smaller footprint and reduced material requirements can be advantageous in sensitive environments or where access is extremely limited.
